Mystery illness keeps more than 200 kids from Texas school

What made dozens of students sick at a Humble ISD elementary school? The Houston Health Department is still trying to answer that question.

78 kids were absent yesterday and more than 200 stayed home Thursday.

Steve Schmelzer, a parent of a student at a Humble ISD elementary school, had a few second thoughts about walking his kids to school today.

"Yeah, yeah, it is normal to be worried about something like that, but I trust the steps the school has taken," Schmelzer said.

While Steve's kids are fine, the school reported 78 absences and sent other kids home Wednesday after students experienced vomiting and diarrhea.

The school has been sanitized and Steve made sure his kids take an extra step to stay safe.

"We reinforced the importance about hand washing," Schmelzer said.

At least one parent told us she took her child out of school today because of the illness going around, but other parents are confident enough to bring their kids to class.

"They need to come to school, but they are doing what they can over here, so I'm comfortable," Wendy Lattier, a parent, said.

So far, nothing has been singled out as the cause.
